image Gretchen Hatfield is a painter and illustrator with roots in New England, the Virginias, and Canada. She paints and draws in acrylics, brush-and-ink, and watercolor and her subjects include animals, landscapes, and scenes of historic interest. Chief art influences come from illustrators such as Ernest Shepherd, Sir John Tenniel, and Howard Pyle.

Gretchen is particularly drawn to paintings that tell a story.

From the Lascaux caves to the pre-Raphaelites, to N.C. Wyeth, Carl Larsson, and countless others, Hatfield's work follows from these visual predecessors, creating a world steeped in color, history, and story-telling.
